people use spacers to keep each tile an equal distance apart as they install it on your wall, floor or countertop. When you install tile yourself, spacers make it possible to keep straight grout lines and square tiles together as the adhesive dries.
instructions:
A. Lay out tiles to make sure you know your pattern. Use a jury stick or a large floor space to visualize how tiles need to be placed. Take into account any accent tile and unusual spaces to work around, such as a sink or shower corner.B. Spread the tile adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. Place the tile onto the glue surface, sliding it into place with a twisting motion, or as directed by the tile retailer.C. Lay spacers on all sides of each tile, making sure they are straight as you place them. Spacers can be any width, typically ¼ or 3/8 inch. Some tiles have spacers built into them but you can use extras to create a larger grout line.D. Work on 3-foot sections to ensure a uniform look. Finish one section, repeating the use of spacers for each tile, and move onto the next. Take your time and constantly check to make sure the tiles have equal spacing.E. Remove spacers after tiles have been placed but before they fully adhere. Most adhesives set in 20 to 30 minutes, but check the packaging or manufacturer's notes for exact instructions. Make sure all spacers are removed and allow tiles to set completely before grouting.
